Traditional Irish Music Development, Appreciation & Mentoring by one of Ireland’s leading Accordionists

At the core of these master classes is a focus on instilling in the student a value and appreciation of our Traditional Irish Music & its Masters. This is the vital phase in any musician’s development, as it will influence their stylistic choice and musical direction in the future.

To quote the renowned poet Ciaran Carson “To know the way forward, you must also know the way back”.

With Danny as a mentor, through interactive practice led research each pupil will build and expand their knowledge base. Utilizing audio and visual aids they will develop an understanding and respect for past and current masters of our tradition and their influential contributions and legacies.

Throughout these master classes, Danny provides continuous attention to detail on the fundamental requirements of accordion playing such as Instrument control, Finger Technique, Rhythm & Phrasing, Basses, Ornamentation and Variation.

O’Mahony has immense experience in Traditional Irish Music tuition over a period of three decades. He is a guest tutor in various University Irish study programmes both nationally and internationally and is a registered tutor with the Kerry Education and Training Board. In September 2019 University College Cork supported by the Arts Council of Ireland appointed Danny O’Mahony as their Traditional Artist in Residence. This prestigious position consists of conceiving and delivering a series of Lectures & Concert Performances throughout the year at the School of Film, Music & Theatre at UCC.

These one-hour master classes, which are hosted once a month, are available to all ages and levels, from beginners to advanced. To maximise benefit for each student, class numbers are limited so early booking is advisable.

MASTER CLASSES take place in the following venues:

  • Áras na nGael, Dominick Street, Galway City.
  • Rowan Tree Hostel, Harmony Row, Ennis, Co. Clare.
  • Killarney School of Music, Central Point, Park Road, Killarney, Co. Kerry.

From his own Music Library in Ballyduff, O’Mahony mentors all levels of students from beginners to advanced. Each pupil has access to his thousands of musical references i.e. Books, Recordings, 78’s, L.P.’s, Cassettes, Mini Disc’s, CD’s & Photographs. While teaching, Danny makes constant references to these teaching aids so in turn the student is learning from Danny but also from the greatest composers and practitioners of our Traditional Irish Music and Song. This further enhances the learning experience and accelerates each pupils knowledge and capabilities. This location in North Kerry is easy accessible, just one hour from Limerick City on the Wild Atlantic Way and it continues to attract budding accordion players from all over Ireland.
